Focus on others’ positives


There was a dunghill near a rich man’s house. All sorts of unwanted things had been dumped there. But from the midst of it there arose a rose plant. A flower had blossomed in it. A man passing by the dunghill exclaimed, “What a dirty dump!” The dunghill said to him:”Why do you look at me? Look at the rose that has sprung out of my bosom, and is radiating its beauty and fragrance all around.”

The dunghill’s counsel helped open the man’s eye. “To see the positive side of others is positivity, appreciativeness. To see only the bad qualities of others is negativity. Positivity does good to both; negativity doesn’t do good to either.”

  A well-fed buffalo was standing before a mountain. Its owner took it into his head to climb up the mountain, which he did. Standing on the top of the mountain, he gazed around. For a few seconds his eyes ‘took in’ the lush-green scenery around and the vasty sky above. Then his gaze turned towards the buffalo standing at the foot of the mountain. It looked so small. He exclaimed, “How small does the buffalo looks.” His buffalo, at the same time, looked up at its master on the mountain. It exclaimed, within its animal mind, “Surprising how small my master look!” In reality, who is small? Nobody. It is a perception which people get when they compare others with themselves. WHO IS GREAT?

      Here is a symbolic tale. Once four people set out to sea seated in a big boat. One of the four was a rich man; another was a man of learning; the third was a strong and sturdy man; the fourth was a handsome man. Each one of these was thinking in his own mind that he was super.     The boat was now far out to sea. Then the sea got rough and a gale blowing rocked the boat to and fro. They all feared it would capsize. All four of them, seized with fear, desperately prayed to the water-nymph. The goddess, who knew what was going on in their minds, before the gale, said, “Let him who is ablest among you save the rest.” They all said, turn by turn, “No, there is none who is a hero among us. You alone are great. Kind mother, do save us from this calamity.” “In that case, you all live together, loving one another, and not hating,” said the water-nymph. Thus did the goddess of the sea save them.

A WORLD-VIEW

  King Bhoj was himself a poet. Kalidas was the court poet. Both were great souls. There was some little pride in then about their sublime poetic art. One day they went for a long walk in the forest. They could not find their way back. And there was no one around whom they might ask. At this juncture they saw a hut in the distance. They went there. There was an old, experienced woman. The king and the court poet said to her, “Respected old lady, we have lost our way. Which way is Mithila, please?” The old woman said, with a view to testing them,”Being men of learning and high culture, you shouldn’t have lost your way. How come it happened so?” Bhoj and Kalidas were taken aback by the old woman’s question, “Yes, we shouldn’t have, but unfortunately, have lost our way.
